Week One

Being Different in 2009
As we evaluate our life at the beginning of the New Year, does it seem that you are heading in the same direction as everybody else? After a while this sense of sameness makes us feel trapped. How do you stand up and be different?

When I feel trapped I notice that I have sat down or been knocked down. I recall that the Lord only expects me to stand up.

The verse is something like stand up and see the deliverance of the Lord.

The battle is the Lord's all we must do is not lose hope but stand up.

I would like to hear more about this, it is hard to stand up against things, trying to be strong in what you need to do for yourslf, and what's best for you in your personal walk with God, without seeming judgmental towards others.

It is hard to stand up and be different and you have to realize that it is going to cost you something, but in my experience the payoff is always greater than the sacrifice.

One of the areas that I find most challenging to be set apart in is parenting. I have always tried to teach my son to be respectful to others, to dress modestly, to behave like a gentleman, and to guard his eyes, ears, heart and mind. It hasn’t been easy and even among “the church” sometimes I feel scrutinized for not letting him be a kid. So where do you draw the line? How do you teach your child to be salt and light, to be in the world but not of it? How can you teach them to relate to their generation, but still be set apart?

In a culture where there seems to be a general lack of respect for ourselves and others, where even Christians seem to be desensitized to the perverseness of music, television, and movies, where people are never satisfied with the “stuff” that fills their lives, how do we escape the trap of following the crowd?

I so think that there are a lot of us in that boat. We try "To Keep Up With The Jones" and we forget that God created us to be who He wants us to be not what the world wants us to be.
